What is Common Between Olympics and Network Marketing ?

The pursuit of excellence...these are words that we have all heard and in light of the Olympics going on, I wanted to take that analogy and apply it to those of us in Network Marketing.

If you are taking your business seriously, you are in the pursuit of excellence. The keys that make world class Olympic athletes are the same ones that can and will make you a success in your business. **A side note, my cousin trained for the Olympics in field hockey, so I truly understand the qualities needed to perform at that level, and I'm not downplaying that or saying that those of us in network marketing are comparable to Olympic athletes, simply comparing the qualities that both require!

Commitment- You absolutely must be committed to your business, day in and day out in order to succeed. So many people with potential give up too quickly when they don't see immediate results in their efforts. It takes time and a commitment to success that will ultimately take you to your goal. Is it easy, no, but then nothing worth having ever is. Does it become easier over time? Yes, because you learn to work smarter, not harder, much as a seasoned athelete does in the prime of his/her career.

Desire- In my opinion, this goes hand in hand with commitment. Basically this is your why? Is it for more money, more time, more freedom? Is it a desire to challenge yourself in some way? You must decide the why of your desire and stay focused on it as obstacles and unexpected issues come up. Most of us life have many desires, but we end up settling because it's the easy way out.

Ethics and Morals- Taking pride in what you do and your accomplishments are crucial to your success. Let's take for instance the whole doping issue of the Olympics. Athletes are tested to make sure that they are "clean" in order to compete. Those who are in violation are banned and lose everything they have worked for. In network marketing, there are the unscrupulous marketers who give the industry a bad name with the ponzis and pyramid schemes. Moral of the story: The shortcuts and promises for the instant glory, fame and money do not work if you are looking at building a long-term residual business.

Persistence/Determination- I have grouped these 2 together because I think they are interchangeable terms. If you are determined, you will persist in a course of action. Not to keeping harping on the point, but most people who get into network marketing give up way too early because their results are not instantaneous. You must be persistent and you must be determined to work your business. I am always amazed when I hear and see interviews with Olympic athletes who have persisted in their course of action over many years and never have a chance to stand on the podium, but continue to show determination in pursuing the dream.

Consistency- Think about this...what makes atheletes great? It's because they can consistently produce the same results time after time. In network marketing, you must be consistent. Listen to the leaders in the industry; use the proven techniques that get results. If you are consistent in your marketing efforts, your advertising, your communications with others, taking advantage of trainings offered by your company and applying what you have learned, you will experience success.

Time/Effort/Work- Yep, I'm afraid that you will have to do all of these things in order to have a succesful business. Here's the beauty of network marketing though...these things get easier over time. You will put in a lot of time initally in your business, particularly in learning your product and company (as well you should). If you are truly serious in growing your business, it will require effort and work on your part. As much as a world class athlete has natural ability, it requires the 3 characteristics mentioned to hone and polish that ability to a diamond like shine.

Focus- It is SO easy to lose focus. You have a bad day, a prospect you've been talking to signs up with someone else, you get lost in cyberspace on forums, chat sites and suddenly 3 hours have gone by and you've accomplished nothing that you set out to do. We all do it at times, and sometimes you need a diversion, but the key is to make sure that whatever you did not accomplish goes to the top of your list for the next day. I find that I have 2 focuses: one is what my ultimate goal is; the other is what I call my focus for the day. That may be posting to my blog, it may be learning some html code, it may be taking a training in my company, but it is a smaller focus that leads me to my main focus/goal.

These are just a few of the qualities that have come to my mind as I am watching Michael Phelps win yet another gold medal, as I watch a swimmer that has no hope of standing on the medal stand, yet continues to persevere in pursuit of his/her own personal excellence as I hope that you will do....

All the best to you!
